The Ukrainian League of Authors is a public organization on the collective management of author’s rights (OKU). It is a single organization among Ukrainian OKUs, the main direction of which is theater sphere.
The League represents and protects the rights and interests of its Ukrainian members and foreign authors who have granted their authors’ rights to its management on the territory of Ukraine.
In 2010, the League was created by natural persons – authors of original and/or derivative works. Among the members of the organization are playwrights and translators, directors and scenographers, composers and choreographers. Among them are well-known Ukrainians, such as Yurii Andruhovych, Natalka Vorozhbyt and Serhiy Zhadan, and leading playwrights of Europe and the USA – Martin McDonagh, Marius von Mayenburg, Duncan Macmillan, Frederick Stroppel and many others whose interests the organization represents in Ukraine.
One of the tasks of our organization is to popularize the work of its authors, to promote them not only on the territory of Ukraine, but also abroad. Therefore, we are happy to join the creation and implementation of the European theater project TAW – Theater and War – under the auspices of the European Commission, the ultimate goal of which is to hold in Helsinki a major festival of Ukrainian topical drama, which was created during Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and reflects the reaction of Ukrainian society to the war.
We are sure that this theater project will give us and the audience the opportunity to trace and see what happened to a simple person in Ukraine, what the playwrights themselves felt when faced with the horrors and absurdity of war. These events need to be fixed, the experience needs to be understood.
We hope that we will succeed. And the European audience and theater professionals will discover new names and new works.
